It’s known as a date which will live in infamy, and for 96-year-old George Kondas, the attack on Pearl Harbor seems like it was yesterday. He’ll never forget the sight of hundreds of planes coming in from every direction, ships burning, the sinking of the Arizona, the Oklahoma turning over and the sheer chaos of the day. Not only is he one of the last remaining Pearl Harbor survivors, but this World War II veteran is also a two-time cancer survivor.
Moffitt Cancer Center will honor Kondas and the men and women who served our country during a Veterans Day ceremony at 8:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 10, in front of the flagpole at the Red Valet hospital entrance.
The tribute also includes a special patriotic performance by the Moffitt choir and Freedom High School’s Navy Junior ROTC Color Guard presenting the colors and raising the flag. Moffitt’s Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Jack Kolosky will emcee the event, 12-year NFL veteran and CEO of CTV Capital Vincent Jackson will make a special presentation to Kondas, and Retired U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Sonya Bryson-Kirksey will sing the national anthem.
