Clearwater police arrest Anthony Roy who shot Bernard Richards 17 times

A man was arrested Sunday morning in connection with the fatal shooting of Bernard Antonio Richards Saturday night in Clearwater, according to police.

Anthony James RoyAnthony James Roy, 50, was involved with an altercation with Richards, 31, outside of the Stop N Shop convenience store located at the corner of South Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue and Woodlawn Street.  Police say just after 10 p.m. Roy shot Richards 17 times, kicked the man as he lay dying on the sidewalk.

Clearwater police spokesman Rob Shaw detailed the case.

Roy was arrested and taken to the Pinellas County Jail. He faces a first-degree murder charge.

According to police officials, Roy and Richards were acquaintances.
