New ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ film to star Margot Robbie, may be Redhead Pirates spin-off

Disney will turn to an A-list actress to head their Pirates of the Caribbean franchise as it heads into a new chapter, one with less or no Jack Sparrow. Margot Robbie (Suicide Squad, I Tonya) star has been hired to reunite with Birds of Prey and Bumblebee screenwriter Christina Hodson for the new adventure.

THR broke the news “While plot details are being kept in Davey Jones’ locker, the project, in early development, is not intended to be a spinoff of the long-running franchise that had pirate Jack Sparrow at its center, but rather a wholly original story with new characters under the Pirates moniker, itself inspired by the long-running attraction at Disneyland.”

This is rumored to be separate from the new project, an announced reboot with scribe Ted Elliott and Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin developing the story, but it seems odd to envision the franchise expanding without any proven commodity.

Longtime Pirates producer Jerry Bruckheimer is attached to produce both the Elliott/Mazin project and this new Robbie/Hodson project.

Slash Film theorized that Disney wants to build a story around the redheaded female pirate which was added to the theme park ride to replace the heavy set redhead being auctioned off after the pirate invasion.

“Rumors have swirled since then that this could be the seed for a future film and now, a female-fronted entry in the series has appeared on the horizon. Coincidence? Maybe! But I’m wondering if Margot Robbie has started trying on red wigs,” Slash Film stated.

Birds of Prey was a box office disaster, riddled with social justice tropes and divisive feminist plot points, but Robbie’s stardom has continued to rise with underrated performances in films like Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Bombshell.

Stay tuned as more details will arrive.
