India: Kerala woman gang raped after traveling 300 km to meet man she met online

A woman from the city of Kollum in Kerala state, India was gang-raped after traveling 300 kilometers to visit a man she’s been communicating online with for some two years.

The 28-year-old woman traveled to the coastal city of Kozhikode to meet the man, only to get drugged by the man and his three friends who took turns raping her and filming the attack.

They finally dumped her near near a hospital after threatening her with publicizing the video.

“The hospital alerted the police,” assistant commissioner of police K Sudarshan said, adding that the accused left her near a hospital because they were afraid she may die. Her condition now is stable, he said.

The woman, who is still under treatment at the hospital, shared the phone number of the man she was in touch with and some other details to help the police track down the accused.

According to the Kerala police, through July 2021, 1266 rapes have been reported. This compares with 1880 rapes in all of 2020.
